HISTORY - Robin Ellwood traveled to the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica with Peter Doran's research team from the University of Illinois, Chicago. The team arrived in Antarctica in November (2003, 2004, 2006) and remained in the field for about six weeks. The team downloaded data and reset monitoring stations that are in the field, collected water and sediment samples from several lakes and nearby streams, determined brine and sediment depths in some of the lakes, and observed the underwater algal mats. Ms. Ellwood had to complete most of this work under the lake ice. That's right, with a dry suit and SCUBA gear, she worked under 15 feet of ice!
Ms. Ellwood has been invited back to Antarctica to participate on Peter Doran's 2008 research team. She will be diving under the lake ice again and bringing along a remote controlled camera that her students built.
